When to use PNG to WebP
Convert when the destination will not take PNG or when the trade-offs of WebP suit you better. PNG is lossless, so the file you upload still holds every original pixel and, if it has one, a full alpha channel. WebP keeps near-identical quality at a much smaller file size than JPG or PNG, and supports transparency. Support is universal in current browsers but patchy in older desktop software. Because the source is lossless, this is the first time the image is compressed with loss. Sharp edges are where a lossy encoder shows itself first - screenshots, UI captures, text and line art - because it spends its bits on photographic detail rather than hard borders. If the picture is one of those and the size saving does not matter, keeping the PNG is a legitimate answer.

Troubleshooting
The background looks white rather than transparent
WebP does keep the alpha channel, so check the viewer first - plenty of them paint transparency white. Open the WebP over a coloured background to confirm, or the PNG may not have had an alpha channel to begin with.
Text and sharp edges look softer than in the PNG
WebP is encoded lossily here, and fine high-contrast detail is the first thing a lossy encoder spends fewer bits on. For screenshots, logos and line art the PNG is often the better file to keep - if size was the only reason you are converting, try Compress Image instead.
The output is larger than the original
Unusual, but it happens when the PNG was already heavily compressed. Try Compress Image instead of converting.
The upload is rejected before anything happens
The file is over the 20 MB cap. Compress it first, or split a long PDF into smaller files and process them separately.
