It works best on photos with a clear subject (a person, product, or object) against a reasonably distinct background - very cluttered or low-contrast images may not come out perfectly clean.

What if the edges aren't perfectly clean?

When to use Remove Background

For product shots, profile pictures and anything you need to drop onto another background. Detection is automatic, using the u2net model, and works best on a clear subject against a background that differs from it. Fine detail like loose hair, fur or a subject that blends into the background is the hard case, and edges can come out approximate.

Troubleshooting

Edges around hair or fur look rough

Fine strands are the known limit of automatic segmentation. A higher-contrast original helps more than anything else.

The background is still there when you open the file

The output is a transparent PNG; some viewers show transparency as white or a checkerboard. Check it against a coloured background.

The upload is rejected before anything happens

The file is over the 20 MB cap. Compress it first, or split a long PDF into smaller files and process them separately.
