Merge, Split, and Reorder PDF Pages

Most PDF headaches are not about converting anything. They are about the pages: you need to combine a few files, drop a page, pull one out, or fix one that scanned in sideways. There are six tools for this and the names overlap enough to be confusing, so here is the map.

A table mapping each PDF page task to its tool: merge, split, extract pages, delete pages, rotate, and organize for combinations.
Six tools, six jobs. Organize PDF is the one to reach for when more than one applies.

Combining files

Merge PDF takes two or more files and stitches them into one. In the editor every page shows up as a thumbnail, so you are not merging blind - you can drag pages into any order before downloading, and you can interleave pages from different files rather than just concatenating one document after another.

That interleaving matters more often than you would think. Scanning a double-sided document on a single-sided feeder gives you all the odd pages in one file and all the even pages in another, usually in reverse order. Merging them page by page in the editor is the fix, and it is much faster than printing and rescanning.

Up to 20 files per merge.

Breaking one file up

Split PDF goes the other way. Set cut points between pages, or split after every N pages, and you get a separate PDF for each section bundled into a single download.

Two common uses: pulling a 60-page board pack into per-section files that people will actually read, and getting a document under an upload limit by sending the relevant half.

Need just a couple of pages rather than a clean division?

  • Extract PDF Pages pulls out exactly the ones you pick into a new file. Everything else is left behind.
  • Delete PDF Pages does the inverse - keep the document, remove the pages you name.

They are the same operation from opposite ends. Pick whichever leaves you naming fewer pages: extracting 3 pages from 40 beats deleting 37.

Fixing and rearranging

Rotate PDF turns pages that scanned in sideways or upside down, one at a time or all at once.

The important detail is how it rotates. The rotation is written as a real page property in the PDF, not applied by rasterising the page and turning the picture. Text stays sharp and selectable, the file does not balloon, and nothing is flattened into an image. Some tools take the lazy route here and you end up with a document you can no longer search - worth checking whichever tool you use.

When several of these jobs land at once, Organize PDF is the all-in-one: drag to reorder, rotate individual pages, and delete the ones you do not want, then download once. That last part is the real saving - each separate pass means another upload, another download, and another chance to lose track of which version is current.

Which one do I want?

  • Two files into one - Merge PDF
  • One file into several - Split PDF
  • I want pages 4, 5 and 9 - Extract PDF Pages
  • I want everything except page 12 - Delete PDF Pages
  • Page 3 is sideways - Rotate PDF
  • More than one of the above - Organize PDF

The common thread

All of these keep your page content exactly as it was. No re-compression, no quality loss, no rasterising - they are moving pages around, not re-encoding them. A merged document is exactly as sharp as the files that went into it.

That is worth contrasting with the round-trip approach some people reach for: converting to images, fixing the order, and converting back. That works, but it destroys the text layer, and the result is a stack of pictures you can no longer search or copy from. Use the page tools instead.

Limits and the things that go wrong

PDFs are capped at 50 pages and 20 MB each, with up to 20 files per merge.

Two failures come up:

  • The file will not upload. If it is password-protected, run Unlock PDF first with the password you have. Page tools cannot read an encrypted document.
  • It is over the size cap. Compress PDF usually gets an image-heavy file comfortably under 20 MB without touching the text.

Finishing touches, once the pages are in the right order: Add Page Numbers for anything that will be printed or referenced in a meeting, Watermark PDF to mark a draft, and Protect PDF if it is going somewhere sensitive.

Like everything here, the files are deleted from our servers an hour after you are done.
